Department of Health Seeks Volunteers, Organizations Interested
in Youth Substance Abuse Prevention

The Department of Health seeks partners interested in the prevention of substance abuse among pre-teens and teens to serve on an advisory council for its Strategic Planning Framework State Incentive Grant Program, commonly referred to as SIG.

Health Commissioner Julia Sheen said Tuesday that the grant of $771,761, which was funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under the U.S. Department of Health, will provide for youth substance prevention initiatives over a five-year period.

“We are looking for volunteers and organizations interested in substance abuse prevention for children 12 to 17 and urge them to attend this meeting to see how they can become involved,” Sheen said.

The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 1016 on June 29 and 30, 2010, at the Charles Harwood Memorial Complex.

Discussions will include an overview of the SIG program and participation in the Planning Advisory Council, among agenda topics.

For further information contact SIG Director Floyd Pittman at 773-1311, Ext. 3032.
